Meeting Notes

  • Topics: FORTH will describe the current status of the modelling activities and clarify open issues with the RAM team
  • Participants: FORTH (Yannis Marketakis, Nikos Minadakis), FAO (Aureliano Gentile, Giulia Gorelli), RAM (Mike Melnychuk, Daniel Hively)
  • Date: May 19, 2016
  • Location: Skype

Notes

  • FORTH described how they started the modeling activities. More specifically they transformed the MsAccess databases to XML, by preserving the table and column names. They prepared a document (that can be found in the bottom of the page) containing the appropriate XPATH expressions for retrieving the RAM concepts that have been identified in the minimum requirements list. During the discussion FORTH asked for confirmation or further clarification for some concepts.
  • The discussion was focused on stock concepts since RAM does not contain information about fisheries
  • Stock ID: OK
  • Stock Name: FAO asked where does the name come from. RAM responded that it is a combination of the common name and the area name
  • Species: OK
  • Fishing Area: The reported value is the water area ID. FAO asked if there are more information about the area name. RAM responded that there are more information in the table area (country, type, code, name). FAO asked if there are more information that would allow us understand if an area from RAM is the same with an area from FIRMS. RAM will produce an intersection table for the areas that will be delivered to FORTH, in order to be exploited. FORTH asked if this table could be public (at least within the VRE) so that it can be part of the process of the (re-)construction of the GRSF. FAO and RAM agreed.
  • Exploiting fishery: there is not any information in the table
  • Assessment unit ID: the given IDs cannot conver more than on stock, and a stock can be assessed by many assessments.
  • Management Unit: FAO mentioned that what characterizes a management unit is the management authority and the water area. It seems that in RAM the water area is missing, therefore we should handle the given information as a ManagementAuhtority (or ManagementEntity) rather than a ManagementUnit.
  • Assessment Method: OK
  • Scientific Advice: RAM team reported that they have only a few information (about 1-2 stocks) but in future they might have more. This information can (and will) be found at the table tsmetrics under the column Cadvised.
  • State of marine resource: there are various timeseries to exploit. The proper values to use can be identified by selecting those having the "touse" suffix (i.e. BMgttouse, BMsytouse, etc.)
  • Exploitation rate : same as above.
  • DB Source: OK
  • Source of Information: OK
  • Ownership: the recorder is responsible person (not the institution). RAM mentioned that they have some citation information in the back-end which is not visible in the front end. RAM will see if they can include it in the next version of the DB.
  • FAO asked RAM if they have information about the 3-Alpha codes in the database. RAM said no.

Actions

  • FORTH to continue working on modeling based also on the above recommendations
  • RAM team to prepare an intersection table about areas (in the form of a CSV, XLS file)
  • RAM team to send an updated version of the DB
