10 November 2022 - Discussing the SFP area database and the GRSF git repository

Participants:
FAO (Aureliano Gentile, Emmanuel Blondel)
SFP (Susana Segurado, Merul Patel, Patricia Amorim, Arturo Muñoz Albero)

Meeting Notes

Scope of the meeting was to further discuss the structure and needs of the SFP are databases and its complementarity with the GRSF Github areas vocabulary.

Emmanuel and Arturo presented the GRSF_Areas_Geoflow proposal (https://github.com/GRSF/water_areas_geoflow), an automated "R" process that connects the GRSF records UUIDs with the area polygons identified. Through the "namespace" and the "area_code" unique combination of each record area, the process identifies the area polygon metadata in the GitHub GRSF water_areas_vocabulary (https://github.com/GRSF/water_areas_vocabulary) and the specific GIS polygon in the GitHub GRSF water_areas_shapefiles (https://github.com/GRSF/water_areas_shapefiles), building a geopackage with all area polygons standardized with the metadata agreed between UW, SFP and FAO colleagues. Finally, the process extracts the specific record area polygon for displaying it in GRSF map visualizator of each record. A scheme of the process can be found in the image below:

The final geopackage containing all area polygons standardized with the metadata agreed between UW, SFP and FAO colleagues, can be also used as an "Area Database" with links between areas metadata, areas code systems, system owners, organizations, countries, etc. The participants agreed to agregate the information as per the "areas_db Database" diagram developed by SFP colleagues and available at: https://s3.amazonaws.com/areasdb.sustainablefish.org/relationships.html

A preview of the diagram can be found at the image below:

Actions

  • SFP team to reconvene a new call on the matter to further analyze the needs and better design roles of the different actors.
  • Emmanuel and Arturo to complete the development for the rendering of the new ares inventoried and stored in the GRSF Github areas vocabulary.
  • Aureliano to investigate any legal constraints regarding the opening to the public the GRSF Github areas vocabulary.
