- 21 December 2021, testing GRSF UUIDs for traceability
Participants:
FishSource (Braddock Spear)
FAO (Nada Bougouss, Aureliano Gentile)
Meeting Notes¶
Key points¶
FAO and FORTH discussed whether and how to move forward with any possible testing of the GRSF unique identifiers.
FAO is running a normative work on traceability led by FAO sub-committee on Fish Trade. Countries gave guidelines on how to progress on KDEs CTEs identifying minimum requirements.
Capture fisheries pilots can be in Barbados, Mauritania (request for traceability), Tunisia (potentially).
"Advancing end-to-end Seafood traceability" document to be further drafted on KDEs, CTEs. Deadline is end of January for a new round of consulation toward presenting the final version to the next FAO Sub-committee on Fisheries (May 2022). Case studies for Caribbean, North Africa, East Asia regions.
Ocean Innovation Challenge proposal submitted by SFP, looking forward to receiving approvals. Pilot projects could start after June-July after some GRSF validation records.
Argentina is evaluating the SFP proposal to integrate the GRSF UUIDs in the supply chain for Hoki fisheries.
Testing UUIDs, what does it imply? It is more education about the GRSF and training of its components, check the databases in use by the seafood companies or governments and see how the UUIDs can be integrated. The validation basically would consist of using it!
The package proposal on improving traceability in countries includes KDE, CTE and possible integration of UUIDs. It is important to consider the objective of the country, for example food safety, compliance on catch documentation schemes within the PSMA, eco-labelling, import regulations, B2B setting requirements for retailers (e.g. on sustainability), data collection and standards (e.g. Philippines different agencies).
Pilot tests can be run where the needs of countries match what the GRSF UUIDs can offer.
To assess the potential interest, some capacity building on knowledge on traceability might be required, and carry out an analysis of any available data (and databases) to track the supply chain.
SFP is running some work in Mauritania on Octopus fisheries, some synergies might be found with FAO on artisanal fisheries in Mauritania.
Global Dialogue Seafood Traceability (GDST) B2B principles and criteria somewhat overlaps the KDEs/CTEs elaborated from FAO. Ecolabelling not included.
Actions¶
SFP to inform about the status of activities on Octopus fisheries for Mauritania and indicate any possible way to initiate a collaboration.
SFP to provide a scenario for field projects.
FAO (Ms Nada) to reintegrate GRSF in the document as appropriate (27 Jan 2022).
