Meeting Notes
Topics: Discussing with IATTC on GRSF
Participants:
IATTC (Alexandre Aires Da Silva, AAS; Carolina Minte-Vera, CMV; Joydelee Marrow, JM)
FAO (Aureliano Gentile, AG; Nicolas Bailly, NB)

Introduction of participants

  • AAS: IATTC is in a transition phase with respect to collaboartion in FIRMS, after the retirement of Mike Hinton, who was the representative of IATTC in FIRMS. They expect this meeting to help AAS and colleagues to understand who is the most relevant person among them to attend the EAB TWG3.
  • AAS: previously collaborator (stock assessment) of Mike Hinton. Now IATTC Scientific Coordinator.
  • JM; data manager
  • CMV: Stock assessment

Presentation of GRSF

  • AG: General presentation of GRSF, and its development so far, emphasizing the contribution to SDG, and the assignment of UUIDs. GRSF has brought some attention, especially FIRMS (see report of SC10 of June 2017), and interest was expressed to continue to maintain and develop GRSF after the end of the BlueBRIDGE project.
  • AAS: What work does the participation to the EAB TWG3 workshop imply for IATTC, to be able to select the correct profile of the person to attend.
  • AG, NB: BlueBRIDGE ends the 28th February, so no additional fishery technical work is requested. The workshop is about defining the future for GRSF after the BlueBRIDGE project. The person should have the ability to discuss this topic, a good knowledge of IATTC and its capacities, but also a good knowledge of the fishery biology domain.
  • AG: In any case, the workshop will welcome any participant sent by IATTC.
  • NB: The attendant of the workshop will not necessarily be the representative in the FIRMS SC.
  • AAS: What workload and GRSF meetings does imply the future work for GRSF.
  • AG: If the current option of the business model with FIRMS as the major actor, it is probable that GRSF discussion will be convened at the same time as the FIRMS SC. Also, as side discussions during FAO-related meetings where FIRMS partners are present such as COFIs. The next one is in June 2018, and it is expected that GRSF (and the chosen business model/plan) will be endorsed at that time.
  • AAS: IATTC is keen to continue within the FIRMS partnership, and to collaborate to GRSF. Some time of data manager and stock assessment scientist could be allocated to GRSF. This will have be set up after the workshop the transition phase.

Presentation of the workshop

  • NB reviewed the agenda and the preparatory questionnaire of the workshop. Due to the current situation of IATTC, some questions could not be answered understandably (e.g., possible role of IATTC in the FIRMS-GRSF business plan).
  • AAS: It seems that there is no problem for IATTC to join any public and public-private partnership. Only the IATTC data use and share policy about the confidentiality of some data may restrain some collaboration (but it will be the case for any RFB/RFMO).
  • AG: GRSF contains only data made pubic by their providers anyway.
  • AAS: IATTC is already engaged in collaborations with the private sector (e.g., ISSF - International Seafood Sustainability Foundation). IATTC could ask partners to join GRSF when relevant, public or private.
  • AAS: IATTC seems not to know about SDG14.4, but A will investigate a bit further if some work is already done.
