17-09-20 GRSF validation

September 20, 2017 - Planning improvements for the GRSF

Meeting Notes
Topics: Planning improvements for the GRSF
Participants:
CNR (Pasquale Pagano, Costantino Perciante, Francesco Mangiacapra, Massimiliano Assante)
FORTH (Yannis Marketakis, Nikos Minadakis)
FAO (Giulia Gorelli, Anton Ellenbroek, Aureliano Gentile)

The participants discussed the following topics:

  1. Highlight any issues to accomplish what was suggested to improve the GRSF interface (CKAN Catalogue)*. See list of actions at https://support.d4science.org/projects/stocksandfisherieskb/wiki/17-08-05_GRSF_validation (minutes of the meeting, 5 August 2017).

  2. Management entities, Areas. Still weak points, what can be done to improve the quality of this information given the limitations in the source data?

  3. New requirements may pop-up soon due to on-going discussions among GRSF data providers and as outcome of this UUID testing phase. There could be the need to enlarge the scope of the GRSF fishery notion while maintaining the original UUID logic. Is there any way the UUID/Semantic Identifiers can be enriched with additional/multiple components. Can we group UUIDs to encompass broader fisheries (multiple species. Gears etc.)? Would be the blockchain principles relevant for our needs? Can CNR-FORTH make any proposal to present at the TCom, depict any scenario?

  4. Sustainability plan and business model.

Topic 1

  • CNR informed the participants that a parallel environment has been set up for the GRSF Admin VRE in order to propose a new structure and new features for "Organizations", "Groups" and "Types" by re-arranging them and adding new top level entry points (e.g. status of the record). A dedicated call will be launched when the new GRSF Admin will be ready for being evaluated.
  • FAO stressed out the need to improve the readability of the semantic identifiers. In particular:

apply a lowercase/upper case pattern to codesystem/code
apply a bold font to the codes (TBD)
modify the order of the components, i.e. place the management entity (ies) before the jurisdiction area codes. Eventually the order will be Species + Fishing Area(s) + Management Entity(ies) + Jurisdiction area(s) + Gear type + Flag State. In case of multiple management entities, these are repeated together with its own jurisdiction area.

Topic 2

  • Lino Pagano suggested to make an estimate of the amount of records with wrong or missing components in the semantic identifiers so to identify categories of problems and how to address them

Topic 3

  • Aureliano Gentile introduced the needs to cope with coming feedback and possible new requirements along the GRSF notion of fishery. In this regard he invited CNR/FORTH to elaborate scenario and possible solutions which even if not feasible during the project can be answers for the future. FAO will produce a brief document on the matter.

Topic 4

  • Anton Ellenbroek introduced the topic 4 on Sustainability plan and business model, soon a document will be circulated for feedback. He also asked if the GRSF application has been ever considered for being reutilized in other contexts. FORTH clarified that GRSF, being domain specific, cannot be used as it is but in the future there could be opportunity for its re-use.

Follow-up actions

  • CNR/FORTH to improve the CKan catalogue as per above minutes (some will be done before the TCom, others need more time for being implemented). See list of actions at https://support.d4science.org/projects/stocksandfisherieskb/wiki/17-08-05_GRSF_validation (minutes of the meeting, 5 August 2017).
  • CNR to launch a call when the new GRSF Admin will be ready for collecting feedback
  • FAO to elaborate above topics 2 and 3 in a document/slides for CNR/FORTH to provide feedback and possibly proposals at the TCom
  • FORTH to provide figures for the amount of records with missing components in the semantic identifiers or with unknown/wrong codes
  • FAO to circulate a document on GRSF business model for feedback by CNR and FORTH
