Notes
From Brad:
If the GRSF isn’t on the list of services you currently have to find a business model for, I’d like to add it. I’ve been speaking with potential users (eg, traceability technology companies, seafood suppliers, retailers) about the stock/fishery unique ID aspect of the GRSF. They see significant value in this to the seafood industry, and I’m confident this service can be monetized.
At this point, I don’t have a potential third-party identified who can administer these services for the industry (ie, a connector between the GRSF and industry), but there are lots of options, including setting up a new legal entity. Once the ID service is linked to business, other services about sustainability and other information can then be layered on top that would be of value to companies.
Whatever business models are developed, we can make sure that funds are allocated to support the GRSF to maintain the database (eg, cover staff time to accept, validate, and add new stocks/fisheries). There are lots of other details to consider. Fortunately, at this point we have a time to continue exploring an arrangement like this.
Follow-up actions
- FAO to organize a workshop at the end of February to treat several matters including business models and sustainability aspects.
