January 26, 2017 - Presenting the GRSF Catalogue and the VRE GRSF-Admin: application and content related issues, and how to move forward (FishSource - RAM - FAO)

Meeting Notes
Topics: Presenting the GRSF Catalogue and the VRE GRSF-Admin: application and content related issues, and how to move forward.

Participants:
RAM (Michael Melnychuk)
FishSource (Braddock Spear, Susana Segurado)
FAO (Marc Taconet, Giulia Gorelli, Anton Ellenbroek, Aureliano Gentile)

Notes

  • FAO expressed the possibility to organize a GRSF Workshop, to be held possibly before the TCom (6-10 March 2017). FishSource and RAM expressed availability to attend the workshop at the end of February/beginning of March. The main issues to be tackled during the workshop were identified as follows:

GRSF Standards: finalize discussion on standards for the GRSF fields of the database and relative guidelines;
Master Data Management (MDM): how this FAO initiative can serve the GRSF handling of local classifications;
Data validation workflow: validation steps that the GRSF admin would need to tackle to approve a GRSF record (stock or fishery);
Governance and Sustainability: which are the aspects to address during the next 12 months (before the end of the project) by a dedicated resource who can depict scenarios and make investigations on feasibility.

  • FAO presented the two VREs: GRSF and GRSF Admin. GRSF is expected to be populated with approved records and will be accessed by the public (registered users). So far that VRE is empty. The GRSF admin allows authorized users to manage the state of the GRSF records and to check the source records. The two VREs containing the GRSF data are relying upon the iMarine data catalogue based on the CKan open-source data portal platform.

  • Regarding the VRE Admin, the attention was stressed on:

    • Catalogue Interface (including the GRSF record page) and search tools (full text search, groups, tags) and how these could be improved;
    • The fact that at the moment no record has been merged, due to heterogeneity of standards used by the different sources (e.g. for the area field).
  • FAO reminded that for the first release of the GRSF prototype any code has been accepted in the GRSF database for the above reason. But to move ahead it was highlighted the importance of adoption of shared standards as a pillar of the GRSF information. In particular the proposal for handling GRSF spatial references was recalled (see also https://support.d4science.org/projects/stocksandfisherieskb/wiki/16-09-27_GRSF_requirements).

    • According to the above proposal, it was asked to FishSource and RAM whether they could provide mapping rules for the area field, or, if not available, coordinates for bounding boxes or polygons for the unique identification of areas within the GRSF records. This will allow the software to detect similar or coincident stocks from different sources for potential merging which will be finally approved (or rejected) by the GRSF administrators. Maps can be also generated with such submission of information. Both RAM and FishSource responded positively by indicating some ways forward.

Follow-up actions

  • FishSource to check the data harvested from FORTH and to provide instructions to FORTH on how to harvest geospatial information from the FishSource database.
  • RAM to provide standard codes for areas (e.g. NMFS codes, GSAs) or coordinates (polygon or bounding box) for the major areas covered in the RAM database. The list of major areas will be then used also for MDM purposes by FAO team.
  • FAO to prepare the next call with material for the workshop.
  • FAO to compile requests for improving the catalogue interface and functionality.
